One hundred and forty New York Army National Guard soldiers from the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, based in Syracuse, were sent on a mission Friday that will take them to Germany to help train Ukrainian military personnel.
According to a press release, the soldiers will replace 160 Florida Army National Guard soldiers from the 53rd Infantry Brigade Task Force Gator who are deploying in support of the Joint Multinational Training Group Ukraine mission.
Since November 2021, these soldiers have been training Ukrainian personnel at the Yavorov Combat Training Center near Lviv in western Ukraine.
They were ordered to leave Ukraine for Germany in February 2022 before the invasion of Russia. The Florida team now manages the training of the Ukrainian military in Germany and elsewhere.
The farewell ceremony was held at the Thompson Road Armory at Hancock Field Air National Guard Air Force Base, north of Syracuse.
The team from New York will train at Fort Bliss, Texas before heading to Germany. They are expected to replace the Florida team to support the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine mission in September.
In 2017, the New York National Guard sent 220 troops to Ukraine for a 10-month rotation, training Ukrainian troops at the Yavaryv Combat Training Center.
The team was led by the 2nd Squadron of the 101st Cavalry, which was headquartered at Niagara Falls Air Force Reserve Station but included soldiers from all over New York.
In November 2017, they replaced the Oklahoma National Guard’s 45th Infantry Brigade Command. In August 2018, the New York Army National Guard team was replaced by soldiers from the Tennessee National Guard’s 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment.
Since 2015, the Joint Multinational Training Group-Ukraine has been training and advising the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
